Workshop prepares laboratorians for emergency events

The State Hygienic Laboratory recently conducted a workshop to help prepare laboratorians throughout the state to identify substances that may be used in potential agents of terrorism.

The “Sentinel Lab Rule Out of Potential Agents of Bioterrorism” is a hands-on exercise for laboratorians to practice the identification process and the proper way to ship these materials to the Hygienic Laboratory for testing.

Laboratorians practice how to identify potential agents of bioterrorism as part of a preparedness workshop hosted by the Hygienic Laboratory.

The two-day session was held on March 10 and 11 at the Center for Laboratory Advancement in the Hygienic Laboratory’s building. It also included related lectures by Hygienic Laboratory subject-matter experts.

“Preparedness for detecting events of biological terrorism is the responsibility of every laboratory performing microbiological cultures, and this training provides in-depth information and hands-on experience,” said Wanda Reiter Kintz, Emergency Preparedness coordinator.

Twenty people participated in this annual workshop.
