Iowa's Newborn Screening Program to pilot screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)

Iowa's Newborn Screening Program to pilot screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
June 1, 2020 -- The State Hygienic Laboratory is a proud partner of Iowa's Newborn Screening Program. In July, a pilot will begin to screen for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

In Iowa, the law requires all babies have the newborn screen panel, which screens for 50 conditions. A few drops of blood are obtained from a newborn's heel before leaving the hospital. The blood comes to SHL for testing. We know that earlier treatment leads to better outcomes for children. With continued efforts, all newborns born in the state of Iowa will have the opportunity to live their lives to their full potential.
