Bacteriology

Bacteriology uses cultures and a variety of biochemical and molecular methods to grow and identify bacterial pathogens that can cause illnesses in humans. Organisms for which testing is conducted include E. Coli O157, Salmonella, parasites (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium) and fungi (including histoplasmosis).

The Hygienic Lab’s Bacteriology group serves as the public health reference laboratory for the state of Iowa, and is responsible for the identification of bacterial pathogens of public health significance. We also partner with the Iowa Department of Public Health and local Public Health Departments to investigate foodborne and waterborne outbreaks. Laboratory disciplines within Bacteriology department include mycobacteriology, parasitology and mycology
