Workshop helps clinicians practice preparedness

March 26, 2019 --

The State Hygienic Laboratory will present a course for Iowa clinical laboratory staff as a refresher on how to detect highly infectious agents that may be used in bioterrorism events.

Wet Workshop

“Identification of Bioterrorism Agents: Wet Workshop” will be offered Wednesday, May 8, and again on Thursday, May 9, at the State Hygienic Laboratory in Coralville.

Guided by SHL staff, participants will use inactive specimens to identify highly infectious diseases and “select agents.” These are toxins and biological substances that have the potential to pose a severe threat to public health and safety.

The course is suggested for microbiologists new to the clinical microbiology lab setting, laboratorians wanting to improve or retain proficiency with select agents and laboratory managers.

An estimated six contact hours of continuing education (PACE) credits will be offered for clinical laboratorians at the completion of the workshop.

Registration is open through 5 p.m. on April 19 via Eventbrite website.
