Case counts rise in foodborne outbreaks

Aug. 31, 2018 --

The number of cases of intestinal illnesses caused by two foodborne outbreaks identified in July continue to climb in Iowa. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced on Aug. 23 that, although the number has slowed, there have been newly identified cases of Cyclospora and Salmonella reported in Iowa.

The outbreak of Cyclospora linked to salad and wraps sold by McDonald’s restaurants was first reported by CDC on July 26. To date, 99 Cyclospora cases have been reported in Iowa, with a national total of 507 cases in 16 states.

On July 17, HyVee grocery stores recalled its Spring Pasta Salad because of possible Salmonella contamination. The salad was sold primarily at HyVee stores in the Midwest. It has been associated with 26 Iowa cases and a total of 79 cases in nine states, IDPH reported on Aug. 23.

IDPH works in collaboration with local public health agencies, the State Hygienic Laboratory and the Department of Inspections and Appeals to investigate gastrointestinal outbreaks linked to recalled products.

More information about Cyclospora linked to salads sold by McDonald’s is available from CDC. Details about Salmonella linked to spring pasta salad sold by Hy-Vee also are provided by CDC on its website.
