Agency issues Salmonella alert for brownies

April 20, 2017 --

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public alert on April 20 about suspected Salmonella in brownie mix packaged by Conagra Brands in its Banquet Chicken Nuggets with Mac & Cheese meal trays. The alert applies to 110,817 pounds of frozen meals distributed nationwide.

The FSIS reports that, as of that date, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from eating this product. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.

This public health alert applies to the following breaded chicken nugget, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate brownie meal tray produced on Jan. 26, 2017.

  • 7.4 oz. vacuum-packed trays containing "BANQUET Chicken Nuggets with Mac & Cheese" with Code 3100080921 and a "BEST IF USED BY" date of July 20, 2018.
  • Printed on the side of these boxes is FSIS Establishment Number "P-9."

The alert was issued after the supplier of the brownie mix notified Conagra that an ingredient in the product may be contaminated by Salmonella.

The CDC reports on its website that, "Most persons infected with Salmonella bacteria develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized."

Consumers with questions about the public health alert can contact Conagra Brands Consumer Affairs at (800) 289-6014. FSIS issued details about the alert and additional consumer support information on its website.
