Bacteria resistant to antibiotics placed on reportable list

The State Hygienic Laboratory began testing for carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in January, the same month the Iowa Department of Public Health temporarily added CRE-caused infections to the list of reportable diseases in Iowa because of its emerging threat to public health.

Cat in northern Iowa tests positive for rabies

Testing by State Hygienic Laboratory on Saturday, April 15 confirmed a case of rabies in a cat from northern Iowa.

Agency issues Salmonella alert for brownies

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public alert on April 20 about suspected Salmonella in brownie mix packaged by Conagra Brands in its Banquet Chicken Nuggets with Mac & Cheese meal trays. The alert applies to 110,817 pounds of frozen meals distributed nationwide.

Staff and friends celebrate at awards ceremony

Hygienic Laboratory staff and friends gathered for the annual Reward and Recognition Ceremony on April 19 to celebrate outstanding staff achievements for the past year. The event was held in the Coralville lab's Center for the Advancement of Laboratory Science. The Ankeny laboratory celebration is planned for May 18.

Minnesota and Nebraska confirm measles cases

The Minnesota Department of Health announced on April 21 a total of nine laboratory-confirmed cases of measles in Hennepin County in southern Minnesota. The department announced the first two cases in this outbreak in the same county on April 12.

Partners fund six new Hygienic Laboratory projects

Six new Hygienic Laboratory projects received funding from state and national partners in the last five months. This funding helps support the unique capabilities of the public health laboratory system, including Emergency Preparedness; Education, Training and Professional Development; Limnology (water quality monitoring); and Environmental Microbiology/Office of Research and Development.
