First flu-related death in Iowa A woman from central Iowa has died due to complications from influenza. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced on Dec. 19 that this is the first reported influenza-related death in the state during the 2016-2017 flu season.

Inaugural UI program names Ambassador as fellow The Iowa Institute of Public Health Research and Policy announced on Oct. 19 that Kelli Ryckman, associate professor of epidemiology and State Hygienic Laboratory Public Health Ambassador, was selected for its inaugural Policy Fellow Program. In addition to Ryckman, the other 2016-2017 Policy Fellows are Mary Charlton, assistant professor of epidemiology, and Cara Hamann, associate in epidemiology.

Network combats ‘nightmare bacteria’ Each year, some two million people are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and 23,000 die as a result. To combat this threat, CDC launched the Antibiotic Resistance Lab Network (AR Lab Network) in the fall of 2016. All state public health laboratories, including the State Hygienic Laboratory, are part of this network.
