State archaeologists and lab confirm time in a bottle Iowa City was a rapidly developing urban center in 1910. The River to River Road – now Highway 6 – was improved, making it possible to drive an automobile from the Mississippi River to the Missouri River. The CRANDIC interurban railway carried passengers between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The University of Iowa celebrated its 63rd anniversary, and the Iowa Law School moved into the newly constructed Gilmore Hall.

Lab expands capabilities with support of CDC funding Advanced molecular detection methods such as Next Generation Sequencing, and testing for antimicrobial resistant bacteria, Zika virus and biosafety for high consequence pathogens will be enhanced at the State Hygienic Laboratory due to increased support from the CDC’s Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity Cooperative Agreement (ELC). More than $2 million for fiscal year 2017 was awarded to SHL, nearly double the funding of the previous year.

Quarter Century Club honors staff The State Hygienic Laboratory honored its long-time staff members with a celebration on Oct. 7 in its Center for the Advancement of Laboratory Science, inaugurating the laboratory’s Quarter Century Club. More than 25 former and current staff members and their families attended.
