Zika transmission identified in patient to caregiver The Utah Department of Health and CDC are investigating a new case of Zika that is not believed to be travel-related, sexually transmitted, or acquired through local mosquito vectors. This case, announced by CDC on July 18, was a family contact who provided care for an elderly man. The man died in late June from unknown causes.

Consumer advisory issued for Big G’s potato salads The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) jointly issued a consumer advisory on July 25 for potato salads made in and sold by Big G Food Store in Marengo, Iowa. Big G’s “Zesty Potato Salad” and “Traditional Potato Salad” have been implicated in several cases of foodborne illness reported in Iowa County. Presumptive test results from the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa indicate the presence of Salmonella in these products.

Iowa screens for rare condition in North Dakota July 1 marked a big day for babies in North Dakota. The state newborn screening program expanded their newborn screening panel to include a disorder called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, or SCID -- sometimes known as "bubble boy syndrome."
