Deadline nears for Student Mentorship Program

Attention, students and teachers interested in laboratory science. The State Hygienic Laboratory is accepting applications for the annual Student Mentorship Program. The deadline is Dec. 18.

Laura Stowater received a Student Mentorship award during the 2014-2015 school year to test water for E. coli and filtration as an eighth -grader at Algona Middle School.

The mentorship program is an opportunity for students to work with Hygienic Laboratory scientists to help develop junior high and high school level science projects.

Selected projects must have an element of testing related to the environment or public health. Hygienic Laboratory staff provide the testing and mentorship. Students have an opportunity to learn about careers in public health laboratory science.

Videos by students who previously participated in the program are available on the State Hygienic Laboratory’s website. Additional information about the program and a link to the application also are on the website.

Applications and questions about the Student Mentorship Project should be sent to Beth Hochstedler or Rick Bonar.
