Mumps cases continue to increase The number of laboratory confirmed cases of mumps in Iowa continues to grow since the outbreak began in mid-July. As of Nov. 20, the State Hygienic Laboratory confirmed 165 mumps cases. Of these, 139 cases were in Johnson County.

Iowa reports two influenza-related deaths The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced on Nov. 16 that two middle-aged men from central Iowa died from influenza-related causes. Iowa has the highest number of influenza cases this season, followed by Oregon and Rhode Island.

Test measures insecticides linked to bee decline A test developed by the Hygienic Laboratory can detect very low levels of insecticides that have been linked to the decline in bee populations. The laboratory developed the test in 2014 to test water for neonicotinoid insecticides, which are allegedly highly toxic to bees. From July 2014 to July 2015, the number of samples received for this test increased by 63 percent.

CDC applauds fluoridation in Iowa water Thirty-nine Iowa public water systems are exemplary in the way they maintain fluoridation levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Iowa Department of Public Health announced on Oct. 16 that the CDC recognized these water systems with its Water Fluoridation Quality Awards for maintaining fluoridation levels.
