Hygienic Laboratory announces new Ambassador

The State Hygienic Laboratory announced on Sept. 17 that Michael Schultz will be its Environmental and Public Health Ambassador for 2015 – 2016. Through the Ambassador Program, the Hygienic Laboratory works with leaders in the state who share a common goal to raise awareness of public health and laboratory science.

Awareness month celebrates the lives touched

Since 1966, hundreds of Iowa babies have been helped through early detection of inherited conditions that, if left undetected and untreated, can have devastating health effects. The Iowa Newborn Screening Program (NBS) works around the clock, 365 days a year, to ensure that these conditions are identified so lifesaving treatments can be provided and babies can thrive.

KUOO takes a minute at Lakeside

Becky Thorsen of KUOO Radio in Spirit Lake spent a minute with Dennis Heimdal at Lakeside Laboratory to report about the Hygienic Laboratory and his work at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Regents Resource Center. The “Lakeside Science Minute” aired on July 27 and was sponsored by the Friends of Lakeside Lab.

Staff receive Excellence Awards

Two staff members from the State Hygienic Laboratory are recipients of 2015 excellence awards from the University of Iowa Staff Council and the Iowa Board of Regents. Limnology supervisor Michael Birmingham was awarded the David J. Skorton Staff Excellence Award in Service, and Bonnie Rubin, senior associate lab director, received the Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award.

Photo Feature: Students meet laboratory science

As teachers finalized their curriculum for the new school year, many built into their activities a visit to the Hygienic Laboratory to explore laboratory science. These students and teachers represented the many who call the Hygienic Laboratory their home, for at least one day.
