Arsenic testing available for private well owners

Private well owners in Iowa now may have their drinking water tested for arsenic at no cost through the Grants to Counties Program. On July 1, arsenic was added as an optional analysis to the minimum analyses for nitrate (including nitrite) and total coliform bacteria performed for the program by the State Hygienic Laboratory.

Project AWARE meets the Wapsi

The State Hygienic Laboratory is one of 89 sponsors of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ annual river clean-up and stewardship event – Project AWARE. This year, AWARE brought a total of 433 volunteers and staff to the Wapsipinicon River for a 63-mile adventure.

Hygienic Lab reports 13 mumps cases

The State Hygienic Laboratory announced on Aug. 24 that it has reported 13 cases of mumps in Iowa since mid-July. All the cases occurred in Iowa City with an average patient age of 22.

Investigation finds flu outbreak in care facility

Iowa Department of Public Health announced on Aug. 7 that it had joined a county health department to investigate an outbreak of influenza A (H3) in a long-term care facility. The State Hygienic Laboratory confirmed cases associated with the outbreak and reported results to IDPH.

Laboratory Symposium set for Sept. 29

The 48th annual Laboratory Symposium will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the Hygienic Laboratory in Ankeny, located on the Des Moines Area Community College campus.

Photo Feature: Becoming AWARE

For the 433 volunteers who were part of Project AWARE, a week’s work can be measured in more than 30 tons of scrap metal, tires, household hazardous waste and other trash pulled from eastern Iowa’s Wapsipinicon River. Five Hygienic Laboratory employees were among the volunteers for the July 12 – 19 Iowa DNR event.
