Strategic Planning tackles lab processes

The many steps required in testing and sample tracking will be more efficient at the Hygienic Laboratory, thanks to the work of a Strategic Planning team.

Laura Clark, clinical lab analyst, has been facilitating projects that create efficiencies in routine lab processes. A microbiologist by training, Clark recently completed training in a quality improvement system known as Lean. Using this system, Clark helps staff identify ways that the Hygienic Lab can streamline processes, eliminate redundant movements and minimize waste.

Clark’s project is a goal from the ongoing Strategic Planning, led by Lorelei Kurimski, director of the Office of Organizational Development.

Bacteriology, for example, is working to improve the procedures of its Trichrome test for sexually transmitted infections. The team also is working with Client Services to adjust the ordering process of enteric kits, and with lab technicians on communication related test requests.

While these processes are at the section level, members of the Strategic Planning workforce team also are focused on lab-wide applications. The workforce team is looking for ways the Rewards and Recognition Program can increase staff participation and communication.

Clark sees her goal as helping the lab become more efficient. She hopes that – through the input of staff members – the process teams will improve the procedures used in work areas and put the best tools for the jobs in close, logical proximity while also focusing on customer value.

Most importantly, Laura says that by encouraging the engagement of front-line staff, “They can learn that their input matters.”
