Ambassador Program expands into STEM From engaging girls in science, to maternal and newborn screening, biotechnology and
more, the State Hygienic Laboratory's Ambassador Program has worked to raise awareness
about lab-related issues since 2009. On July 31, it moved into the future with the
appointment of Dave Jacoby as its new Ambassador.

Project AWARE teams with South Dakota Like all great adventures, Project AWARE is relived year after year in the stories that
emerge during a week of camping and river clean-up. This year’s AWARE (A Watershed
Awareness Expedition) seemed to have more than its fair share of fodder for
storytelling.

Environmental Health Fellow continues biomonitoring project The State Hygienic Laboratory recently welcomed Nathan Bullock as an Environmental Public
Health Fellow assigned for one year to work on a biomonitoring project at the Iowa
Laboratories Facility in Ankeny. The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL)
and the Centers for Disease Control are sponsors of this fellowship.

Tackling the Big Sioux River Hundreds of Project AWARE volunteers and staff wrangled 30 tons of garbage and other
debris from the Big Sioux River last month. Lab Link tips its virtual hat to these
volunteers, to the Iowa DNR coordinator Lynette Seigley, and to our staff members
who represented the Hygienic Lab so well.
