Summer line-up includes State Fair and Farm Progress Show

The State Hygienic Laboratory will bring its message about environmental and public health to two quintessential Iowa venues this summer. On Aug 14, the Hygienic Lab will host a booth with interactive games at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. From Aug 26 – 28, the Hygienic Lab staff will participate in the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa.

More than a million visitors are expected at the 2014 Iowa State Fair from Aug. 7 through 17 at the Des Moines Fairgrounds. The Hygienic Lab will be part of the University of Iowa booth on Aug. 14. John Kempf, environmental lab specialist, took this photo of the iconic State Fair landscape during the 2012 event.

As part of the University of Iowa’s booth, State Fair visitors will be invited to take part in “The Price (of Public Health0 is Right” game, modeled after the popular television show. This interactive game is based on the Trust for America’s Health report, which estimates that the per capita cost of public health in the United States is $24 per year.

A few days later, staff will interact with attendees at the Farm Progress Show, the nation’s largest outdoor farm event, now in its 62nd year. From 1953 to 2002, the event rotated among farm sites in Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. Since 2002, the event has been held in either Illinois or Iowa, and now has two permanent locations in Decatur, Ill., and Boone.

The show attracts farmers and ranchers from around the world to see agricultural products and technology, meet with agribusiness professionals and gain hands-on knowledge of advances in farming.
