Newborn Screening adds detection of SCID

The Iowa Newborn Screening Program, administered by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), will begin routine screening on July 1 for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare inherited disorder caused by a deficiency or absence of cells that help fight infections. Without a functional immune system, SCID patients are susceptible to recurring infections that can lead to death before the first year of life if left untreated.

Fayram named as coordinator for new center

Drew Fayram, who joined the Hygienic Lab last year as an Emerging Infectious Disease fellow, has been named coordinator of the Lab’s Center for the Advancement of Laboratory Science, effective Aug. 29. Fayram will manage the final stage of development of the center, which is in the lower level of the Hygienic Laboratory on the University of Iowa Research Park in Coralville.

Industrial hygiene accreditation turns 40

In July 1974, the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa became one of the first 26 laboratories accredited by the new American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) accreditation program. In 2014, the Lab joins AIHA-LAP, LLC in celebrating 40 continuous years of accreditation at both its Coralville and Ankeny sites.

Teacher begins externship in laboratory science

A West Branch sixth-grade math and physical science teacher will be spending six weeks of his summer at the State Hygienic Laboratory as a recipient of a Real World Externship, an initiative of the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.
