CDC confirms first U.S. cases of imported MERS

Officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported on May 2 that the first U.S. case of imported Middle East Respiratory Syndrome or MERS was confirmed in a health care worker who had traveled from Saudi Arabia to Indiana.After completing additional and more definitive laboratory tests, CDC officials have concluded that the Indiana MERS patient did not spread the virus to an Illinois associate during a business meeting they had before the patient became ill and was hospitalized. This underscores indications that transmission of reported MERS cases has occurred through prolonged exposures of health care workers and patients, or between care providers and patients.

Aldous to head Disease Control Division

The State Hygienic Laboratory announced on May 21 that Lt. Col. Wade Aldous, Ph.D., has accepted the position of director of the agency’s Disease Control Division. Aldous is Chief of Microbiology for the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School in San Antonio, Texas. He is expected to join the Hygienic Lab in July after fulfilling his military obligations.

Iowa and New Hampshire host conferences

Environmental and public health practitioners met in Ankeny on April 28 to consider how Iowa’s environmental health system can be improved to address community environmental concerns. The State Hygienic Laboratory hosted the Environmental Health Conference, “Improving Environmental Health through Innovation, Practice and Policy,” which was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Association of Public Health Laboratories.
