Multistate outbreak of Salmonella linked to poultry The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on June 6 that 224 people,
including five Iowans, have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella
Typhimurium. The CDC reports that the nationwide outbreak has been linked to live
poultry. Only one of the five Iowa cases has been traced to a poultry exposure.

Is well water safe to drink after flooding? Five years after historic levels of flooding, Iowans are again preparing for the
encroachment of floodwaters from rivers in many parts of the state. Nancy Hall,
environmental microbiology manager for the State Hygienic Laboratory, said that those
who have private wells should take precautions to prevent illnesses.

Wichman receives inaugural award for laboratory science The Association of Public Health Laboratories presented its first Silver Award for
professional achievement to Michael Wichman, Ph.D., at the group’s annual meeting on
June 4. Wichman is associate director of the State Hygienic Laboratory and head of
