Iowa is only state lab testing 28 chemicals on EPA UCMR3 list

Are there chemicals in the 34 billion gallons of water provided by public utilities every day in America? The Environmental Protection Agency is helping answer that question with a new list of contaminants that will be part of municipal water systems testing beginning this year and continuing through 2015. The State Hygienic Laboratory is the only state environmental public health laboratory that has achieved approved status to test for all 28 chemical contaminants on this EPA list known as the unregulated contaminant monitoring regulation 3 (UCMR3).

Librarian shares history of Iowa's laboratory

How did the State Hygienic Laboratory go from testing typhoid fever to extracting the DNA fingerprints of illnesses? Kathy Fait, librarian and historian, will connect the dots on Feb. 28 in part one of "The History of the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa." The hour-long presentation begins at 5:30 p.m. in room 401 of the University of Iowa Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.

Day at Capitol is rare experience for young scientists

"Hill days" at the Iowa Capitol connect legislators and constituents in an exchange of ideas and updates. Earlier this month, two young scientists shared news about their Hygienic Laboratory projects with state senators and representatives during STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Day at the Capitol. The annual event held on Feb. 6 was organized by the Governor's STEM Advisory Council.
