Iowa pertussis numbers on the rise

According to testing performed by the State Hygienic Laboratory, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) says more than 150 people with pertussis (whooping cough) have been reported so far in 2012. This is a 121 percent increase over the number of cases reported at this time in 2011. The actual number of cases is probably much higher, because most adults with pertussis are not diagnosed or reported. While children ages 5 to 14 years make up the bulk of reported cases, it's important to note that adults are considered the primary carriers of the disease.

Genetic Alliance recently announced that the State Hygienic Laboratory and the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication won a Baby's First Test Challenge Award for the production of a video about newborn screening.

The STEM of knowledge starts with Mom

Parents in 25 Iowa locations showed their support for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) on April 23 by introducing their elementary-age children to hands-on educational activities during the Mom's Night Out for STEM. Part of a national evening of celebration, the Mom's Night Out activities featured here were held at the Iowa Children's Museum in collaboration with the State Hygienic Laboratory.
