Two fellows join Hygienic Laboratory Staff Two Emerging Infectious Disease (EID) fellows joined the staff of the University
Hygienic Laboratory in September to assist with influenza surveillance in the state
and with other public health testing. Funding is provided by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Association of Public Health Laboratories.
Kara Levinson, a master's of public health graduate from the University of Michigan, and
Anna Van Stelten, a master's of food safety/microbiology graduate from Colorado State University, will
work for one year at the Hygienic Laboratory on the UI Research Park campus in
Coralville.

Fall Forum to bring laboratory preparedness training  The Hygienic Laboratory will hold its Fall Professional Forum beginning Oct. 12
in six locations across the state to update laboratory staff and other public health
professionals on preparedness issues. Registration is required, but there is no cost
for the program.

Applications open for Student Grant Junior high and high school students throughout Iowa can now apply for the 2009-2010
Student Grant program to receive laboratory assistance for science projects. The
University Hygienic Laboratory sponsors the program. The application deadline is
November 30.
