OFFICE OF THE
DIRECTOR
The Office of the Director includes eight offices within the State Hygienic Laboratory that provide specialized organizational services across the laboratory. These offices are: Genomics, Human Resources, Information and Technology, Iowa Laboratory Appraisal Program-CLIA, Organizational Development, Public Policy, Research and Development, and Strategic Communications.

Strategic Communications

The Office of Strategic Communications serves as the lead communications section for the agency, and develops the focus and themes for external messaging. It is the primary interface between the Hygienic Laboratory and the local, state and national media; the University of Iowa communication portals; and other external publications. It provides crisis communications during environmental and public health emergencies, and manages the Hygienic Laboratory’s electronic and social media accounts.

The office focuses on the timely, accurate dissemination of information about the state environmental and public health laboratory’s programs, expertise and services.

Major achievements:

  • Provided media relations to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for its “Deadly Delays,” an investigative journalism series focused on critical timely issues for newborn screening. The series cited the Iowa Newborn Screening Program as a model.
  • Assisted with production of the Big Ten video featuring Erin O’Gara – the Hygienic Laboratory’s first Health Communications Fellow – showing her development of a newborn screening video.
  • Developed marketing materials, a new logo and other support documents for the new Center for the Advancement of Laboratory Science and other core programs.
