The Hygienic Lab publishes an annual report containing financial and statistical reports, outstanding events, and advancements in laboratory practices. Publication follows our fiscal year, which begins July 1.

An electronic version is available here; hard copies are available by contacting the Coralville or Ankeny labs. Contact information is at the bottom of the page.

Journal articles, Presentations and Posters

The State Hygienic Laboratory publishes peer-reviewed articles and presents academic posters to advance public health laboratory science and collaborative research. SHL scientists partner with many federal and state entities, including CDC, the Association of Public Health Laboratories, Iowa DNR, State of Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, FDA and USDA, among others. University faculty, staff and students also are primary research partners.

Lab Link is a quarterly electronic newsletter that includes resources and stories about the many ways SHL is serving Iowa and leveraging its long history and deep expertise to monitor and report on emerging risks to human health and safety. The newsletter will also tout the lab’s support of research and scholarship through collaborations with University of Iowa faculty.



Iowa DNR Guidebook

The IDNR Guidebook is a manual for the Iowa Department of Natural Resource’s environmental personnel who collect air, land, and water samples across Iowa for testing at the State Hygienic Lab. It includes detailed information about SHL’s analytical testing capabilities related to IDNR programs and services. It contains detailed instructions regarding proper sample collection, storage, shipping to ensure accurate and timely testing, and how to access reports via our secure web portal. The IDNR Guidebook test menu does not reflect the full scope of environmental testing performed at the State Hygienic Laboratory.


Well Water Quality and Home Treatment Systems

This publication is an overview of systems commonly used to treat water quality problems. The best approach is to determine how and where contaminants are entering the system and eliminate the entry pathway. Some contaminants are naturally occurring in ground water and treatment may be the only option.

The Hygienic Lab's CLIA Corner can help you stay current with the Federal CLIA laboratory requirements and assess whether your laboratory has the tools to provide quality testing for its clients and patients. The Hygienic Lab provides the personnel to oversee the CLIA program for the State of Iowa, and the federal CLIA program is administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
