Officials add Iowa to recall of fruit linked to Salmonella

July 3, 2018 -- Iowa has been added to the list of states that received pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fruit medley products linked to a Salmonella outbreak. The FDA and CDC made the announcement on June 12, warning consumers to throw away any recalled products and retailers to remove them from their shelves. There have been no illnesses associated with the outbreak reported in Iowa.

Seventy people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Adelaide in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee, the CDC reported on June 18. Of these, 34 had been hospitalized. The products also were distributed in Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

On June 8, Caito Foods recalled the packaged food produced at its Indianapolis facility and distributed to Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods/Amazon in the 13 affected states.

The FDA, CDC, and state and local health officials – including SHL, Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals – are working together to confirm the source and distribution of the pre-cut melons, and will continue active surveillance for additional cases.
