Panera recalls cream cheese due to possible Listeria

Feb. 6, 2018 -- Panera Bread issued a nationwide recall on Jan. 29 of all its 2 oz. and 8 oz. tubs of cream cheese that were sold in its U.S. locations because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Included in the recall are all varieties of unexpired 2 oz. and 8 oz. cream cheese products with an expiration date on or before April 2. Panera issued the announcement after samples of one variety of 2 oz. cream cheese showed a positive result for the presence of Listeria.

Infections of the potentially deadly organism can be serious for pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Although Listeria usually causes a mild illness for pregnant women, it can cause severe disease and is sometimes fatal for a fetus or newborn baby.

“The safety of our guests and associates is paramount, therefore we are recalling all cream cheese products sold in the US with an active shelf life,” said Blaine Hurst, Panera’s president and CEO, in the company’s recall announcement. “We have likewise ceased all manufacturing in the associated cream cheese facility. Only one variety of 2-oz cream cheese from a single day yielded the positive result.”

The FDA advises consumers who have products listed below to discard them immediately. For a full refund, contact Panera Bread Customer Service at 1-855-6-PANERA, or visit Panera.custhelp.com.
