Jan. 4, 2018 -- The University of Iowa announced on Jan. 4 that it has conferred State Hygienic Laboratory Director Christopher Atchison emeritus status as he prepares to retire from the SHL and the University of Iowa, effective Jan. 5. Atchison was also recently named Clinical Professor Emeritus by the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

Emeritus (from Latin, originally meaning veteran soldier) is an honorary designation used to recognize faculty members and other leaders who have served with distinction. Atchison has served as SHL director for almost 12 years, and in public health and public service for more than 40.

Atchison plans to remain active in public health matters statewide and nationally. He recently was appointed to the Iowa State Board of Health, and serves on the boards of the American Heart Association, the Patient-Centered Health Advisory Council, the Public Health Accreditation Board and The Wellmark Foundation.

The UI announced on Dec. 7 that Michael Pentella, a clinical professor of epidemiology in the University of Iowa College of Public Health and former associate director in the SHL, will serve as the lab’s interim director while the UI Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development completes its search for a new director. Pentella’s half-time appointment became effective Dec. 18.
